Overview
The hardware devices outlined in this article are supported in the following product tiers.

This article describes how to configure Heartland Restaurant to use the PAX A35 device to process payments. The A35 terminal is an Android based, multilane transaction processing and mobile smart terminal. This service is only supported by Heartland Payment processing.
To function properly, the device must be loaded with a Special PAXStore template for Heartland Restaurant.
We recommend you make any adjustments to the device at the PAXStore level to ensure that, if the device’s firmware is ever updated or changed, those updates will include the site-specific settings. If you do not set them at the PAXStore level, your settings will be overwritten by any downloads.
Prerequisites
- You must add an A35 SKU to an opportunity in Salesforce.
- The merchant account must have a Heartland Processing MID in Salesforce to complete the order.
- The merchant must be processing with Heartland Payments Systems.

Connecting the A35 Device
- Long thick cord. Plug this cord into the back of the PAX device.
- Short cord with Red Plug. If your site uses Ethernet, plug the Ethernet cord into this cord’s red plug.
- Long thin cord with VGA Plug type. Not used.
- Long thin cord with USB Plug type. Not used.
- Long thin cord with Electrical Plug. Plug this cord into the electrical outlet.
Connecting the A35 Device to a Local Network
You will need to set the A35 device to connect to the site’s wireless network.
- Turn the device on.
- In Home Screen, tap Settings.
- Enter the password (9876 or pax9876@@), then select OK.
Ensure that Wi-Fi is enabled or toggled on. - Tap Wi-Fi.
- Select your local network.
- Enter the network’s password, then tap Connect.
- Wait until the device connects, then tap the Wi-Fi network’s name.
- Select Advanced and scroll up on the screen.
The app will display the network settings. - Record the IP address.
You will need the IP address to configure Heartland Restaurant to communicate with the device.
Configuring Wi-Fi Static IP
- In Home Screen, tap Settings.
- Enter the password (9876 or pax9876@@), then select OK.
- Tap Network & Internet.
- Tap Wi-Fi.
- Tap your network name.
- Select the pencil icon in the top right-hand corner.
- Tap Advanced Options.
- Scroll down to IP Settings.
- Tap IP Settings and, then select Static in the list.
Enter the desired IP address, Gateway, and DNS information. - Tap Save.
Connecting the A35 Device with an Ethernet Connection
To connect the A35 to a local network with an Ethernet connection, follow these procedures.
- Turn the device on.
- Connect the Ethernet cord to the red port.
- From the Home Screen, tap Settings.
- Enter the password (either 9876 or pax9876@@), then tap OK.
- Ensure that Ethernet is enabled or toggled on.
- Tap Ethernet.
The app will display the network settings. - Record the IP address.
You will need the IP address to configure Heartland Restaurant to communicate with the device.
Configuring Heartland Restaurant
The following procedures describe how to configure Heartland Restaurant to use the PAX A35 device.
Creating a Payment Terminal
- Log into the Admin Console (hrpos.heartland.us).
- In the Main Menu, click Account, then click the appropriate account.
- In the Main Menu, click Location, then click the appropriate location.
- In the Main Menu, click Location Setup, then click Payment Terminals.
- In the Payment Terminals screen, click the NEW button to add a Payment Terminal.
- In the Name box, type a descriptive name for the device.
- In the IP Address box, type the IP address of the PAX A35 device.
- If necessary, select the Prompt for Tip check box.
- Click Save to save the record.
- Click Publish to publish changes, then click Yes at the prompt.
Connecting the POS to a PAX A35 Payment Terminal
These settings allow you to attach a PAX A35 to a Heartland Restaurant terminal for normal use.
- Open and log into the Heartland Restaurant POS.
- Tap User Menu.
- Tap Manager.
- Tap Payment Terminals.
- Select the PAX A35.
When the POS connects to the device, it displays a message (“Connected”).
Using the A35 Payment Terminal
The following procedures launch the Portico application on the A35 device allowing transactions to be processed. The device should remain in this mode for the POS to complete credit card transactions.
- From the main screen, find the Portico application.
- Double tap to launch the Portico application from the main screen.
Completing Payment Transactions
The following procedures describe how to process a credit card transaction with the A35 device.
- In the POS, pay a ticket and select a credit card receipt.
If the app is set to prompt for a tip, it will do so. - If prompted for a tip, enter a tip amount, then tap Submit.
- When the app displays the Please Enter Account prompt, enter the card’s number.
If the card has an EMV chip, you can dip the card or tap it against the front sensor.
If the card has no EMV chip, you can swipe it.
If these methods are unsuccessful, you can type the card number into the Please Enter Account box, then tap Confirm. - If the site uses surcharges, the device may display a notification prompt.
- If the device displays the surcharge prompt, tap OK.
If you have dipped the card, the app will prompt you to remove the card. - If prompted, remove the dipped card.
The device will process the payment.
In the app’s settings, you can also configure the payment screen to include Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay as payment options.
Setting the IP Address for Ethernet Connections
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Ethernet.
- Scroll to Configure Ethernet Device.
- Select Static.
- Enter the necessary IP information.
- Tap Save.
- Go back to Settings.
- Select Wi-Fi.
- Forced press your Wi-Fi network.
- Tap Modify Network.
- Select Advanced Options.
- Scroll down.
- Tap IP Settings, then tap Static.
- Scroll down.
- Enter the same necessary IP information.
- Tap Save.
Restarting the PAX A35 Device
To restart the device, remove and reinsert the power cord (using the USB end of the USB power cable), or unplug the power supply.
The power supply should be plugged into dependent source. The PAX A35 does not have a battery, so keep it connected to a valid power source.
